sunday in sahuarita
by nirik on Aug.21, 2005, under Uncategorized
Sunday started very eary here… around 6:30am AZ time. Had a quick shower and breakfast and walk for the dogs, and then we were off to the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge
Man was the desert ever green. Very lush and bright. There was green grass everywhere. I would say about 90% of the cars we saw on the road to the refuge were border patrol. There was one going by about every 10min and one parked along the road every 15. Must be a pretty popular place to pick up people trying to cross the border.
The refuge was nice, we saw a deer (she was laying under a tree, but had her ears sticking out) and a little buck (ram?) antelope…
On the way back we stopped at a sourdough bakery. Very nice place. The rest of the day was spent inside away from the heat relaxing.
You can see how lush it was out there:

The fine road:
Baboquivari Peak. This is the same mountain range that kitt peak is in.

There were lots of flowers like these. Not sure what they were:

Las Cruces to Tucson
by nirik on Aug.20, 2005, under Uncategorized
Well, got up far to early after having stayed up playing games until 2am and took the dogs for a walk. Got to relax a bit and have breakfast and coffee before hitting the road again for Tucson. At least it’s a diffrent road… I10 instead of I25.
Totally uneventfull drive. Got in and had some nice chatting time with my brother and my dad, had a nice dinner then walk around the area with the dogs. Now to sleep since I have to get up very early tomorrow so we can wander down to see a wildlife refuge and get my brother back in time to catch a plane flight.
Here’s my friend K and his pups:
On the way out of Las Cruces I stopped and picked up some lovely relleno borittos for the road:
The dogs were all ready to hit the road:
The thing?
Some nice clouds. I am getting somewhat better at taking pictures out the window while driving:
the thing?
Look! There! Behind that truck! The THING!
(I didn’t stop… I did once and was sorry)
From the texas canyon rest area. Texas canyon is quite pretty. Lots of nice boulders:
From my dads living room window, it’s “Find the woodpecker”:

My dad’s front yard. Everything is very lush here. They got a bunch of rain in the last few weeks:
Denver to Las Cruces
by nirik on Aug.19, 2005, under Uncategorized
I went down from Denver to Las Cruces today. Left around 11:15am and got into Las Cruces at about 9:45pm. It’s a long haul, but I have done it sooo many times, and it’s very easy: You get on I25 and drive south.
As is typical, traffic though denver was nasty:
The first rest area we stopped at had been totally redone and was very nice:
Here’s a look at my passengers:
The next rest area was also pretty nice…they didn’t allow dogs on the grass tho.
South of raton, there was a bunch of construction. They had the machine that rips up the old road and the machine that puts down new road. The anoying part was this construction truck of coolers in front of me. They were going 15-20mph in the only available lane. By the time they got though the construction there were probibly 40-50 cars stacked up behind them.
Santa Fe gas stop:
The final rest area we stopped at was a cool one. Lots of big pylons built over a sandy area.
We finally made it to K’s house and unloaded and decompressed. Here’s kurt saying hi to Heidi:
Twyla and Merlin made themselves at home:
Tomorrow it will be the rest of the way to tucson. Shouldn’t be to hard though, it’s around a 4 hour drive.

He does you know…

In regards to Jeff’s latest posting, he does, you know.
Seriously, it is fun to play with all the cool bloging tech. For example, I am playing with trackback here, which I just read up on today. It’s another thing at the end of the day to have something good to say. At least we can usually gain some enjoyment from playing with the tools and putting things down so we remember them later. In some senses pictures are much easier, since thats all automated and requires just being somewhere rather than having something to say or something you have thought on.
Useless post (more than usual)

Just trying out this Livepress plugin to wordpress…
Not sure if this cut business will work, but it would be cool if it did.
todays birthday pics

Nice reasonably busy day today… with a good Indian food dinner and cheesecake for my birthday.
It’s also elusis‘s birthday. Happy birthday to you!
continuing my attempt to take a few pictures every day, here’s the lot from today:
Here’s kurt and twyla relaxing as they do most every day:
Here’s one of 3(!) wasps nests that were on the umbrella on my deck:
I had the umbrella off to the side for a while while faire was going on and only put it back out last weekend when I had the BBQ. In the mean time the wasps really took up residence. I decided to just leave them alone as long as they would leave me and the dogs alone, but today they buzzed around the dogs and it was time to assert mankinds control over nature though chemical warfare. I was pretty impressed with the can of wasp killer. It had pretty vast range and it took out all the nests without allowing them to even get airborne.
Isn’t 3pm about the worst time to water the grass there is?
Finally we have a cherry tree thats off one of the path’s where we walk every day. Looks like a nice crop of cherries this year:
Oh, for those readying this via the nirikrss RSS feed to livejournal, if anyone can tell me how to get wordpress to make a cutid thing that exports right via RSS, I would be happy to put cuts before all the pictures.

I recently upgraded my version of kimdaba and sorted through my pictures from the last year.
There are only about 1500 or so over the last year. Most of them from the ren faire months. Kimdaba gives you a nice little histogram thing you can see when you took the most pictures and you can zoom in or out on it. Kinda clever.
I am going to try and take a few pictures every day for a while at least and see if I can get a bit better with the camera. Of course most will be of dogs, but I will try and take at least a few a day of other things.
Perhaps I will even get a few good ones.
Heres the pictures from today. A closeup of twyla and a not bad sunset:
pet peeve of the day
by nirik on Aug.12, 2005, under Uncategorized
Just a short note about a pet peeve I ran into today:
If you leave a voice mail or a message on an answering machine and at the end you leave your phone number wanting me to call you back, you shouldn’t rattle it off at high rate of speed once so it can’t be understood. A while back I learned ( I think from jafo ) that you should slowly speak your call back phone number, and then you should repeat it a second time just in case there was line noise or something else that preventing it being heard. If you rattle off your number and mumble, I probibly won’t be calling you back.
party tomorrow!
by nirik on Aug.12, 2005, under Uncategorized
Been slacking again on updating. ;(
Tomorrow I’m having a party/BBQ here. There will be lots of greyhounds and folks from the Faire and others.
Anyone reading this is invited to come on by. It’s anytime after 4pm. email for directions.
It should be a lovely time. Now to get the house ready for it… wish me luck.
