Descartes's Cogito

Perhaps the most famous words Descartes ever wrote were cogito ergo sum. This is a Latin phrase which means "I think, therefore I am." Commonly referred to as the cogito, this simple concept forms the basis for Cartesian rationality. It also serves as the foundation for the idea of the rational, autonomous individual which was to become so important in Enlightenment thought.
